A Few Questions

Apparently, Mike Steele is saying that Democrats are planning for a "less independent" America...

Question One: So, having the government tell you who you can or cannot marry is independent? (And before anyone starts trying to say same sex marriage is going to lead to inter-species matrimony, jump off right here).

Question Two: Having a government decide *for all women* when they can and cannot get and/or stay pregnant is independent?

Question Three: Having a government that privileges the Christian ethos over any other form of theology or letting it trump even non-theological paradigms is independent?

I thought these blue-bloods were Ivy Leaguers?

The OED defines independent as: "Not depending upon the authority of another, not in a position of subordination or subjection; not subject to external control or rule; self-governing, autonomous, free."

What planet is the GOP living on? Oh that's right, the one where only certain people are allowed "independence."

You think they would have figured it out.

Congratulations on a job well done, Skyewriter. Or is it Dr. Skyewriter now?

Thank you! I never feel like I can leave really good comments here because you sum it up so very eloquently.

A less independent America...where we're not torturing people in secret prisons at random.

And the word verification is plato. Ha!

I am in awe of the fact that these supposedly educated people can't put two words together that make any sense...in an academic or a practical sense. Are they dummingdown for their new constituency? Or are they really that lame? Very hard to watch, even if it does work for us in some way!

I've wondered this same thing, especially every time I see a GOP member complain about the "nanny-state" we are apprently headed for (and actually have been developing a post in my mind since ZIRGAR replied to my most recent Sissy Steele post). We need good governement not god government!

Funny how definitions change in the vaccuum that lacks perspective, scruples or context.

You would think that we had moved on since the revelations of Emile Durkheim, but, like you pointed out skye, these are supposed to be Ivy Leaguers.

Uh huh.

If that is true, I hope they got a discount on tuition, to reflect the defective services that resulted in this delusional thinking.

You have heard of White Privilege?

Well welcome to Christian Privilege or better yet, WASP privilege.

In the world of the GOP the only people "allowed" to be independent are rich white misogynist bigoted racist Rethuglicans.

Your last sentence sums it all so very well. I say let Steele and the rest of his cronies, keep running off at the mouth. Keep Cheney and the ethically challenged Gingrich - speaking for your team. It only helps us.

That the leaders of the Republican Party are ultra-rich blue blooded Ivy Leaguers is exactly the point. Ultimately, they don't care about any of these issues because they're not really affected by them. "Values" issues are simply very effective tools used to convince poor people to vote against their own economic interests.

1) while wealthy gays and lesbians may still feel the sting of the insult of not being able to legally wed, they really don't have to worry about shared healthcare or any of the other financial benefits that come with legal marriage. And, anyway, if they really want a legal ceremony, there are lots of countries they can fly to for it.

2) if abortion is made illegal, they'll fly to a country where it is legal for their abortions, just like they used to. Same thing with birth control (and, of course, their kids will be going to private schools with real sex education instead of that "abstinence only" garbage).

3) again, that right wing Christian ethos really won't affect them much. Their kids will go to good private schools that will teach evolution rather than creationism, and they couldn't care less how much fundamentalist Christianity is shoved into the public square. The public square is something their chauffers drive them past on the way to the country club.

Ultimately, the ultra-rich will be "Not depending upon the authority of another, not in a position of subordination or subjection; not subject to external control or rule; self-governing, autonomous, free." That's why their only real concern is keeping themselves ultra-rich.

Well said. The problem is that a lot of people hear whatever is said and don't make the connections you stated. They just go "Yeah, we have to stay independent!" It amazes me how many people do not think for themselves and just spit back what they have heard with fervor.
